Acupuncture for Wellness

Find out more about how acupuncture can be used to improve wellness in Morden
The global wellness industry is apparently worth a staggering $6.8 trillion. Wow.
But the generic label of wellness covers a huge number of areas including personal care, beauty, diet and nutrition, fitness and a bunch of other stuff as well.
It just goes to show that actually, we want to be really invested in our health and wellbeing but sometimes it seems there is too much choice, with a new fad every week, and things that used to be bad are now good and vice versa, so it’s hard to keep track of what it means to be healthy!
A little while back I did a short article on Defining Wellness, but in a nutshell it’s a focus on prevention, healthy lifestyles and the pursuit of optimal wellbeing in the physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and social realms.
So when we talk about acupuncture from a wellness perspective, what do we mean?
In general, acupuncture takes a holistic approach to health, which means it is looking not just at the physical but also the mental, emotion and spiritual aspects of a person, and sees how we can bring everything back into balance again.
Poor health means things are out of balance, good health means things are all working together as they should be. In that sense then, acupuncture seems to be the perfect tool in order to achieve wellness, as it covers all the bases.
But what does that mean, that everything is in balance?
You may be aware of the concept of Ying and Yang, and that forms the foundation of Traditional Chinese Medicine in general, ensuring balance in all things.
The role of TCM and acupuncture is ensuring optimal function. Making sure nothing is excessive or lacking, that the inner and outer layers of the body are both working in harmony, that things are neither too hot and cold, and ensuring your digestive, respiratory, fluid, energetic and circulation systems are all working together and supporting one another.
So how do we do this?
When you come in for an acupuncture treatment, particularly your first intake session, there will be a lot of questions around your general health, medical history, lifestyle etc. That’s because we’re looking for little indicators as to the current state of your health.
Getting sick easily, poor digestion, low energy, issues with sleeping, these are just some signs of disharmony. When you put a set of signs and/or symptoms together, you get a pattern of disharmony, and this is what guides an acupuncture session. Even if you weren’t necessarily aware of these issues, they can be identified via questions about your health, and also through interacting with the body itself, through palpation and checking certain reflexes and pressure points for reactions, a subconscious marker of something happening within the body.
A selection of acupuncture points based on your pattern(s) of disharmony are then used in treatment, and other guidance or advise on diet or lifestyle might also be suggested. Over a course of treatment, all of these ultimately bring your qi (energy) back into balance to make sure everything is acting as it should…essentially a reboot of the system.
The nature of acupuncture means it’s also an excellent preventative treatment, which means it will continue to keep you healthy once you’re back to running at optimum capacity. In which case having regular maintenance treatments every few weeks or so just to keep the wellness topped up is also a great way to have acupuncture.
