Image of man stressing at work - if you need help with managing stress at work, why not give acupuncture a try?

We all lead exceptionally busy lives now don’t we? Whether it be work, relationships, social engagements, or just keeping up with the housework, there is often very little time to truly relax and switch off.

This constant over-stimulation and stress triggers a complex response in the body, releasing hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, and we end up with a whole range of issues such as tension, headaches, insomnia, tiredness, aches and pains, digestive disorders or PMS.

Finding reliable ways to manage stress is essential for maintaining overall well-being. Acupuncture however, offers a natural approach to reducing stress and promoting relaxation.

So what can acupuncture do for stress relief?

From an acupuncturist’s point of view, stress mainly leads to Qi stagnation (Qi / “Chee” is what acupuncturists call the energy that flows in the body and keeps everything running smoothly). Stagnation prevents this smooth flow of energy, and so problems arise from that stagnation. When the proper flow is restored, we relax and the body can regulate itself correctly.

Although still not fully understood, modern science suggests acupuncture may influence the nervous system, releasing endorphins and regulating neurotransmitters that affect mood and pain perception. But what you will find is that acupuncture will help you relax, promote better sleep, help you feel more balanced and relieve tension.

Acupuncture targets the root causes of stress by addressing both physical and emotional symptoms, and most people when they come in for acupuncture feel very relaxed and chilled out - it’s not uncommon to have people fall asleep on the treatment table even with needles in!

The first thing we do when you come in for a treatment is do an initial assessment that covers any key symptoms as well as medical history, lifestyle etc. I might also do some physical checks including pulse and tongue diagnosis, to determine the underlying TCM pattern.

By identifying which pattern or combination of patterns is present, I can then tailor your acupuncture treatment to your particular case. For stress relief, I’ll usually do a kind of “whole-body” treatment depending on your main symptom, using points in the arms as legs, or maybe even points on the back as well, which can be very supportive for the body in general. As I use a number of different tools, I might also use other tools or techniques like cupping, moxa or gentle stretching in combination with acupuncture needles.

The treatment itself usually lasts 20 - 30 mins while you relax on the table, and I’ll check on you periodically to see how you’re doing and maybe make some adjustments.

As I mentioned earlier, most people will feel relaxed during their treatment, but sometimes it takes a while to get the changes to stick longer term, especially if you’re chronically stressed! But you will see gradual improvement over several sessions. We’ll map out a treatment plan for you during your first session so you can understand how many treatments you might need, and also if you need to come more frequently for treatment in the first week or two.

Now, I understand that someone sticking needles into you might be a daunting idea, but if you need to chat through any aspect of treatment or want to find out more, then just get in touch, or even come in for a free consultation/chat about your symptoms and we can see how I can help!
